Directed by Carol Bense
Synopsis:
The three MacGrath sisters are back together in their hometown of Hazelhurst, Mississippi for the first time in a decade. Lenny, the eldest, never left Hazelhurst — she is the caretaker of the sisters’ cantankerous Old Granddaddy.  Meg, the middle sister, left home to pursue stardom as a singer in Los Angeles, but has, so far, only found happiness at the bottom of a bottle. And Babe, the youngest, has just been arrested for the murder of her abusive husband, Zackery Bottrelle. Under the scorching heat of the Mississippi sun, past resentments bubble to the surface and each sister must come to terms with the consequences of her own “crimes of the heart.” This wonderful play won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It will be an evening of great drama and wonderful humor.

The Laramie Project (Claremont)

Amplified Arts and Rural Outright, a program of TLC Family Resource Center, have formed a partnership to produce The Laramie Project next year. Open auditions for early career artists aged 13 to 18 will be held on February 7, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Amplified Arts collaborative arts venue, located on the second floor of 31 Pleasant Street in Claremont.

“This play will showcase the strength of local early career artists while telling an important story” says Amplified Arts Producing Artistic Director Shelly Hudson who will direct the upcoming production,. “We hope to have many artists from all over Sullivan County and beyond involved in both cast and crew for this production.”

The play by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project documents the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, and its impact on the community of Laramie, Wyoming. The production draws on hundreds of interviews conducted with inhabitants of the town, company members’ own journal entries, and published news reports.

“A community’s reaction to a hate crime is central to this production,” says Hudson. “According to Tectonic, the creators and curator of The Laramie Project: It is ok for theatre to be controversial. The goal of The Laramie Project is to promote thoughtful discussion and give audiences the opportunity to hear many different points-of-view from those most associated with the murder of Matthew Shepard. This is, at its core, the purpose of art. We are committed to providing this production to ignite a larger conversation.”

For auditions please plan a 1-minute contemporary monologue and be prepared to read sides from the show. Because of content and language in the production, only those 13 to 18 will be able to take part.

To book an audition time please email amplifiedartsnh@gmail.com prior to February 6th.
